Painting of Treharris from Edwardsville
Looking toward Treharris from Edwardsville, this painting is part of a series entitled "Valley Lines: Bargoed to the Bay".
The paintings explore the historical, economic and cultural connections - both physical and emotional - between people and places in the South Wales Valleys and Cardiff.
The paintings invite the viewer to reflect on Cardiff and the Valleys' move from a (physically tough) industrial and maritime economy, based on the mining, transport and export of coal, to an e-commerce, media and tourism based economy of entertainment and leisure opportunities.
I found a very old monochrome photograph on the internet. It was very poor resolution so I have used a certain amount of "artistic license" to produce a stylised, but other-wise "straight", painting of a view of Cardiff Road looking toward Treharris from Edwardsville.
No "time-shifting" or change of perspective but it is still painted with poster paint (gouache) and crayon.
It may have been incorrectly titled but as my previous themes have included "Unreliable Memories" and dream-like landscapes, it fits in with the overall theme of my work. The title certainly needs a question mark.
The road, in the near distance, splits and goes both up the valley and down. This represents the choices we make as we go through life.
