Buzz Magazine July 2014 said in its preview of this exhibition,
“You might not expect much colour and excitement from an exhibition titled after the Welsh term for ‘grief and sadness after the lost or departed’, but Brinkworth’s Hiraethau is a vibrant exhibition inspired by the pictorially inaccurate but passionate art of children.
For 16 years Brinkworth has been working with children and young people and their artwork. Inspired by the unselfconscious nature of their paintings Stephen decided to approach his work not simply with the same material (he creates his pieces with kid-friendly materials such as crayons and poster paint) but with the same enthusiasm. The resulting landscapes are depicted with odd perspectives, solid colours and geographical inaccuracies: in one painting you can see the long-gone Maritime Museum next to the brand new Senedd building.
For the Hiraethau exhibition Brinkworth has tried to express his feelings of loss with cityscapes full of buildings but lacking in people. This hiraethau has been inspired by a combination of old memories (in 1974 Brinkworth’s family sailed to South America, leaving Stephen behind) and the fresher sadness that comes from friends and family moving and passing away.
The emptiness of the pictures is touching and calmly sad, but the wonky perspective and bold colour keep an uplifting child-like view.”
