Painting of SS Pacific Northwest - Cardiff Docks
My dad’s ship, Furness Withy’s "SS Pacific Northwest" rounds Penarth Head from the Bristol Channel and approaches Cardiff Docks. Another of his ships, Shaw Savill’s "Drina" stands off. Ships in my paintings represent homecoming and the completeness of family. The paddle steamer Waverley (bottom right) is sailing back from far off Ilfracombe.
In the foreground are the new houses around Penarth marina. Though Cardiff was never much of a fishing port, there are a selection of toy boats bobbing in the bay including a couple of fishing boats. Billy the (female) seal - a favourite resident of the pond at Victoria Park - arrived in Cardiff in the hold of a Neale and West fishing boat.
