Crown Fuel Works with Sea Alarm and Mudeford?

Painting by Stephen Brinkworth

50 x 40cm
£550

Painting of Crown Fuel Works, the Tug Sea Alarm and Dredger Mudeford

The Crown Fuel Works occupied the site in Cardiff Docks now partly occupied by BBC Wales studios.

The Works were demolished in 1969.

Of course, in 1969 the Norwegian Church was still in its original position on West Bute Dock.

The painting is part of the series "Valley Lines: Bargoed to the Bay".

The paintings explore the historical, economic and cultural connections - both physical and emotional - between people and places in the South Wales Valleys and Cardiff.

The paintings invite the viewer to reflect on Cardiff and the Valleys' move from a (physically tough) industrial and maritime economy, based on the mining, transport and export of coal, to an e-commerce, media and tourism based economy of entertainment and leisure opportunities.

The Grab Dredger "Mudeford" (apparently pronounced Muddyford by Cardiffians) was a regular sight in Cardiff Bay, keeping the shipping channels clear of mud.

"Sea Alarm" could be seen for many years, landlocked, at the Welsh Industrial and Maritime Museum.

It is worth noting, as Cardiff has moved from an industrial and maritime economy, that even the Industrial and Maritime Museum - which occupied the site to the west of Roald Dahl Plas - has been demolished.
