Painting of Shipping in Cardiff Bay
Though not part of the "Valley Lines" series, this painting also invites the viewer to reflect on Cardiff's move from a maritime economy to an economy of entertainment and leisure opportunities.
Each element of the composition in my paintings are symbolic, and ships, a common feature in my work represent a bitter-sweet, transient homecoming.
Many of the ships in this painting are long since broken up and their officers and crew, who helped to make Cardiff the city it is today, have joined the generations past.
The tanker "Esso Cardiff" heads on out, past Penarth Head (and, improbably, through the barrage), while the white funneled "Balmoral" (always a leisure craft) is on the right.
The yellow boat is taking passengers from the Pier Head to the barrage.
The black hulled ship, "Llandaff" is coming home to Cardiff, as is the Neale and west trawler, "Muroto".
The red ship (bottom left) is Maindy Shipping Co. Ltd.'s "Maindy Tower".
The leisure craft "Daffodil" and "Mantee" are the two boats bottom right.
